Description

The Washington quarter was first minted in 1932 to commemorate the bicentennial of George Washington's birth. Designed by John Flanagan, it replaced the Standing Liberty quarter and was intended as a one-year commemorative. However, its popularity led to it becoming a regular issue. From 1932 to 1964, Washington quarters were made of 90% silver and 10% copper. The composition changed in 1965 to a clad metal consisting of outer layers of copper-nickel bonded to an inner core of pure copper.
