Beals was born in a seaside village in Maine and learned furniture making as a teenage apprentice before joining the Maine volunteer infantry to fight in the civil war. He fought in seven battles, including Petersburg, which would prove to be a critical victory for the Union. He was wounded there. After the war he came home and, in 1867, launched what would become one of the most successful businesses in New England of the late Victorian era. Beals favored oak, ash, birch and later maple. So popular was his furniture, his company shipped all over the Eastern Seaboard as far south as Florida.
