Antique Red-Painted Canted Box (19th c., New England) – original surface

Warm, dry red paint and simple hand-crafted joinery give this piece excellent primitive character. Likely a small candle/utility box that once had a sliding lid (now missing), it has the classic canted (tapered) sides, square-nail construction, and three-board bottom. A faint finger-notch in one bottom board and the groove line along the upper edge are consistent with early slide-lid boxes.
