Description
- Provenance: original artwork signed “M. Souvres”, “Souvicas”, “Souvieg” or “Souvige” lower right This piece was purchased in Europe in the 1960s and has since been part of the Winter family collection of Accokeek, Maryland. - Media: oil on fiberboard panel - Artwork Dimensions: 10 13/16”h x 8 3/8"v - Frame Dimensions: 15 9/16"h x 13 1/16"v - Condition: excellent, like new Although the artist’s signature currently remains a mystery, this work of impressionist realism typical of early twentieth century Europe in its subject matter is rendered with particular skill and a unique sensitivity for detail. The off-center positioning of the windmill and truncation of its reflection give a plein-air feel, to what is likely a fantasy scene. The disrepair of the windmill blades and the subtle turning of the leaves, raised as if in a gentle breeze, give this scene a romanticized early autumn feel. The waterway engages us by inviting us to proceed either left, or right at this stately but haunting and lonely landmark.
