The off-center positioning of the windmill and truncation of its reflection give a plein-air feel, to what is likely a fantasy scene. The disrepair of the windmill blades and the subtle turning of the leaves, raised as if in a gentle breeze, give this scene a romanticized early autumn feel. The waterway engages us by inviting us to proceed either left, or right at this stately but haunting and lonely landmark.
