Description

Vintage US Marine Corps Jerrycan 5 liter capacity dated 20-6-80. Red painted metal. Good condition consistent with age. See pics for details. Origin and Design: The jerrycan, or Wehrmacht-Einheitskanister, was originally designed in Germany in the 1930s for military use. It is typically made from pressed steel. Jerrycans were widely used by both Germany and the Allies during the Second World War. Allied forces adopted the German design due to its superior features, such as the ribbed design which made it less prone to leaking in harsh conditions, compared to their own army-issued containers. They are still commonly used today for carrying fuel or water in military operations, overland expeditions, and for emergency fuel.
