Description

Plant I ship is about 3+ ft tall. First photos show actual or similar plant. Description These plants grow to be enormous, with huge leaves sprouting from a long stems in a flat, fan-shaped pattern like a peacock's tail. The leaf bases create an intricate, overlapping pattern. The leaves collect rainwater which flows into the plant's stems, base, and even its flowers, ready to aid a thirsty traveler. Though it will eventually grow a trunk, this plant needs a wide berth when young. Because of the immense width and height proportions, this is one of those South Florida "palms" that work best in more expansive landscapes and with larger homes. Travelers Palm Hardiness Travelers palm is definitely a tropical plant, suitable for growing in the warm climates of USDA plant hardiness zones 10 and 11. Travelers palm plants may survive in zone 9, but only if they are well protected in the event of occasional frost. How to Grow a Travelers Palm Travelers palm plants tolerate sandy and clay-based soils but prefer moist, rich soil. Although the plant is relatively disease resistant, a well-drained planting site produces the healthiest growth. Provide shade for the base of the plants after planting. Once established, a sunny spot is best, but the travelers palm does fine with a little light shade. Provide shelter from strong winds, which may tear and tatter the huge leaves. This is a good-sized plant that reaches heights of 30 to 50 feet (9-15 m.) and sometimes even more, so provide plenty of space for travelers palm. Allow a minimum of 8 to 10 feet (2-3 m.) from a house or other structure, and 12 feet (4 m.) is even better. If you’re planting more than one, space them at least 8 to 10 feet (2-3 m.) apart to prevent crowding. Caring for Travelers Palms Water as needed to keep the soil evenly moist, but never soggy or waterlogged. Feed travelers palm plants once in spring, summer, and autumn, using a fertilizer formulated for tropical plants or palms. Fertilizer that I include as an option is an excellent choice for professional growers or nurseries if you grow plant in a pot. I personally use it for all my plants. It has polymer coating to allow slow release during 8-9 months evenly. You don't have to worry about repotting the plant for about 1 year or worry about burning plant with your regular over the counter fertilizer. You need about 3-4oz per 3 gal pot or 4-5oz per 5 gal pot. Pictures show adult plant and its possible applications. Root ball of the plant comes in a plastic poly bag, sealed to maintain moisture for the 3 days that the plant is in transit. Height of the plants is measured from the base of the root ball. No returns, refunds or exchanges.
