ETHIOPIAN NACOEJ Jewish Hand Embroidery Moses Red Sea Framed Judaica Textile

Description

Authentic hand embroidered textile created through the North American Conference on Ethiopian Jewry (NACOEJ) fair trade program supporting the Beta Israel community. Although the included NACOEJ letter is titled Moses in the Bulrushes, the embroidery itself depicts Moses parting the Red Sea, shown with his staff, walls of water on both sides, and detailed sea life below. The imagery symbolizes the journey from bondage to freedom and closely parallels the modern exodus of Ethiopian Jews to Israel. These works were hand stitched by Ethiopian Jewish artisans in Addis Ababa as part of a humanitarian program that provided essential income for food, medicine, and daily needs while preserving traditional needlework techniques. Each piece required many thousands of individual stitches and could take up to a month to complete. Originally intended for use as a pillow cover, challah cover, or tallit bag, this example has been professionally framed under glass for display. Includes the original NACOEJ documentation. Measurements Frame: approx. 19 in x 16 in Visible textile area: approx. 14 in x 16 in Condition Embroidery is clean and vibrant with no visible damage. Frame is sturdy and displays well with minor cosmetic wear at the corner (see photo). A meaningful piece of Judaica, Ethiopian Jewish history, and hand embroidered folk art.
