Description
The 1857 large cent is a relatively scarce coin in all grades, not only because of its small mintage, but also due to the fact that so many of this date never left the Philadelphia Mint. When the new small cent was issued in the spring of 1857, the Mint's existing stocks of large cents and half cents were destroyed. Five die marriages are known for the 1857 large cent. N-1 is the sole variety having the Large Date and the one most often seen. Two of the four Small Date die marriages are proof-only coins. The remaining two Small Dates are not rare as individual varieties, but they seem to form a minority of 1857 large cents struck for circulation
