Available powertrains include a turbocharged diesel engine and a hybrid setup that combines a turbocharged gasoline engine with an electric motor. The M5 has a meaty twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine rated at 560 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage in the base model is above average, at 23 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. It's even better with the turbodiesel 535d, at 26 mpg in the city and 37 on the highway. The ActiveHybrid 5 averages about the same fuel consumption as the base model. The 2014 5 Series comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive, and BMW's all-wheel-drive system (xDrive) and a manual transmission are available in some models.
