Description
Chinese 1940s Set Of 2 Reverse Glass Emperor & Empress Portraits, 11x14” SHIPPING IS INCLUDED PLEASE NOTE: The first image is an artistic representation; all other photos show the actual items. Pictures are part of the description — please check them carefully and message me if you need additional photos or have any questions. Great vintage condition for the paintings themselves — vibrant colors, wonderful detail, no visible paint loss. Frames show wear on all edges consistent with age. Defects & imperfections – please check pictures made under the bright light & magnification: • Emperor frame: paint loss on lower-right corner and lower-left edge, small chips along outer edges • Empress frame: a small split on the back of top-left corner of the wood, scattered edge wear, small losses of finish Fascinating Fun Facts: • Reverse glass painting (also called bohuali in Chinese) has been practiced since the Qing Dynasty and requires the artist to paint details backwards, starting with highlights first. • The emperor and empress are depicted wearing dragon & phoenix court robes, traditional symbols of supreme authority (dragon) and noble harmony (phoenix). • Cranes in the background represent longevity and high status, often used in imperial iconography. • These portraits are inspired by ancestral tablets and court portraits once placed in family halls for veneration and blessing. Dimensions: 11 x 14 in Weight: 4 lb 2 oz
