Description
~ This is a stunning and rare antique Judaica brass Besamim box, expertly crafted in the form of an articulated fish. ~ Measuring an impressive 17” in length, this beautifully detailed spice container was traditionally used during the Havdalah ceremony at the close of Shabbat, filled with aromatic spices such as cloves or cinnamon to comfort the soul and welcome the new week. ~ The fish form is symbolic and highly collectible, with flexible, jointed body segments and hinged head. This design was common in Eastern European Jewish communities (notably Poland, Germany, Russia, and Austria) in the 19th and early 20th centuries. While many Besamim boxes were made of silver, this example is a substantial and striking brass version. • Estimated date: Mid-19th to early 20th century • Material: Solid brass • Size: 17 inches long • Articulated body with hinged head compartment • Some small dings consistent with age; chain is missing • Number “4” stamped on one of the scales ~ An exceptional piece of Judaica with historical and spiritual significance, this Besamim box would make an outstanding addition to any collection. ~ Check out the rest of my available listings and contact me for more info 📍Pick up in Palm Desert
