Large Pair of Venetian-Style Blackamoor Torchère Figures – Carved Wood Polychrome Gondola Bases

Exceptional large matching pair of Venetian-style Blackamoor torchère figures, hand-carved and polychrome painted. Each figure depicts a standing Blackamoor holding an oversized torch with a decorative flame-form glass shade. The figures feature painted turbans, patterned sashes and garments, and dark painted wood bodies. Each sculpture stands on an unusual carved boat/gondola-form base, adding considerable visual impact and making this pair particularly distinctive. The torch fixtures appear to have been fitted for electric lighting. Both pieces exhibit age-related wear, paint loss, surface distress, patina, and imperfections consistent with their decorative history.
