Description

Original vintage movie poster half sheet (22”x28”) for the 1944 re-release of “Stella Dallas” which originally was released in 1937. The influential film classic was directed by King Vidor & starred Barbara Stanwyck, Anne Shirley, John Boles & Alan Hale (who is shown in a small black & white photo on the poster & who is father of actor who played the Skipper on “Gilligan’s Island” & who he resembles). Stanwyck was nominated for Best Actress Oscar & Shirley was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Rare vintage movie poster half sheet (22”x28”) for the 1944 re-release of the classic melodrama “Stella Dallas” was in fine to very fine condition prior to linenbacking. The poster had pinholes, minor tears & minute paper loss in folds,, & creases. After being linenbacked & restored for preservation purposes, the poster displays quite well. The intense, dramatic main image of Barbara Stanwyck on the poster does a great job of capturing the film’s mood & style. Stanwyck plays Stella as Olive Higgins Prouty‘s 1923 novel (upon which the film was based) envisioned the character—coarse, cheap, common & yet magnificent as a mother. Stella Dallas is widely considered to be one of Hollywood’s greatest heroines &, even more so, is thought by many to be among Stanwyck's signature roles. Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa cited “Stella Dallas” as one of his favorite films.
