Description
I built this lovely boat using Dave Gentry's "Shenandoah" plans, which are originally for a 13' rowboat! I loved the design but wanted one a bit longer, and as a sailer so I could introduce my granddaughters to sailing! I chose the design as the prettiest small boat I could find: she is graceful, with a lovely "wineglass" transom, straight stem and a nice swing to her sheerlines. She is canvas-on-frame, using tough 8-ounce polyester fabric impregnated with a special "dope" that is very durable over a light wooden frame. A canvas boat is inherenty very light, and even with the extra length, she weighs only about 85 pounds! I made a few other enhancements: - foredeck (strongly reinforced to handle the extra stress of the mast) - centerboard pivots fully out of the way under the middle seat - double keelson for extra strength - double gunwales, again for extra strength - a 1/4" x 5" full-length wooden "plank" below the gunwale, for extra stiffness - pivoting rudder with custom folding tiller extension The sail is a Laser Training sail of 4.7 square meters (50 square feet) on a Windsurfer fiberglass mast. The sail is quite enough to power the boat without being oversize for inexperienced or young sailors, so the boat is suitable for all levels of sailors. She is quick and lively, but also very stable. I sit on the "floor" strips, leaning on the gunwale, very comfortable and easy to maneouvre: the tiller is within easy reach, and the mainsheet is right in front of you. The sail is loose-footed and adjustable in all directions, and there is a boom vang for stability going downwind. The rig is very easy to set up: just set the mast into the mast step (through the deck) and attach the control lines.... 5 minutes! One of the delights of canvas boats is that you can see the waves through the hull, a unique experience! She rows very easily as well, with custom-built oars with captive stainless oarlocks (so you won't ever lose one overboard! The finish is very high-standard, with Petit Captain's Varnish, which has high UV protection, and the yellow trim is Rustoleum. I enjoy woodwork and put extra effort into building her. Most of the wood is Port Orford Cedar, similar to Alaskan Yellow Cedar, an excellent boatbuilding material, light, strong and easy to work with a lovely golden finish. Some Western Red Cedar strips were laid in for a nice contrast. She sits comfortably on a Harbor Freight folding trailer. The combination is light and narrow and easy to tow and launch with even a small car (I drive an MGB, which makes quite a sight going down the road)))... We are in the process of moving overseas, so I am regrettably obliged to look for a new home for her. I hope the new owner will enjoy her as much as I have, building and sailing her. She is registered with the DMV, and her name is "Chaconne", for which I had vinyl lettering made but have not applied to her. The name comes from a piece of solo-violin music by Bach, and refers to "a slow courtly dance". I would be glad to show her, even have a trial sail if you are seriously interested. We live in San Marcos, and Lake Hodges is the nearest water to launch her, 20 minutes from home.
