Description
Japanese Mizuya Tansu (kitchen chest) showcases a refined balance of function and traditional design. Crafted during the late Edo to Meiji period, the piece features a beautiful contrast of light hinoki (cypress) frame and darker hardwood drawer faces. Its clean proportions and compact form make it ideal for both display and practical storage. The highlight of this tansu is the set of sliding doors with hand-forged iron grille panels, backed with fine mesh, which provide ventilation while preserving visual interest. Above and below the sliding panels are rows of drawers, each adorned with traditional hirute-style iron pulls. Originally used in Japanese kitchens to store tableware, utensils, and dry goods, this tansu now serves beautifully as a sideboard, console, or media cabinet. The natural grain and warm patina of the wood are preserved with care, making this a highly versatile and collectible piece for any interior. Age: Meiji period 1868 – 1912 Dimensions: 75″ long x 38” high x 20″ deep
