Description

Add a touch of elegant history to your bookshelf with this striking pair of Israeli brass bookends, measuring approximately 5″ tall × 3¼″ wide × 4″ deep (base depth), and weighing roughly 1 lb 4 oz for the pair. Each bookend features a richly patinated brass relief of a figure harvesting grain—an evocative motif in mid-century Israeli decorative art, celebrating the land, its labour, and harvest. In Jewish tradition, the land’s produce—particularly wheat and barley—is deeply symbolic: for example, one source notes that wheat “represents … the foundation of human existence, the bread of life, and kindness (chesed). Moreover, agricultural imagery in early Israeli art was often used to express the Zionist ideal of land renewal and connection to the soil. On the front of each bookend is a bold stamped mark reading “Israel”, and one includes the same in Hebrew. On the reverse, both pieces bear the embossing “MS/02 NIR-CHEN ISRAEL”—offering clear provenance and mid-century maker-mark authenticity. On the front of each bookend is a bold stamped mark reading “Israel”, and one includes the same in Hebrew. The vivid green enamel provides a beautiful contrast with the warm brass tones and patina, adding rich colour and texture to the pieces’ sculptural quality. These bookends combine functionality with decorative narrative—ideal for lovers of Judaica, mid-century décor, or unique collectible accents. Please review all photos carefully. If you have any questions, I’m happy to help. Also feel free to browse my other listings for similar mid-century pieces. Thank you for looking, and happy collecting!
