Description

For sale is a Vintage Goya GG-174 Acoustic Guitar, This guitar is one of the Levin Made, Model 174's from Sweden that is Rebranded as Goya for the American Market.   For those of you unfamiliar with Levin's or even the older Goya Guitars please see my write up of the history below.  Levin is a Guitar Company who made finely handcrafted instruments in Sweden from 1900 to 1979. In 1952 the Hershman Musical Instrument Co. of New York started the process of contracting Levin to produce guitars for the American Market. By 1954 the contract becomes finalized and the name used for Levin Guitars in the American market is Goya. The Name Goya is believed to be inspired by the Spanish artist Francisco Goya, who was well known for depicting guitars in his paintings. In 1968 the contract is Broken by Hershman Musical Instrument Co. during the acquisition of Goya Music by selling the rights to Avnet Inc, which owned Guild Guitars at the time. The Goya distribution rights were sold in 1970 to none other than Bud Ross, amplifier manufacturer of Kustom Electric. In 1972, Kustom went bankrupt and distribution was taken over by another Chanute company, Dude Inc. While it is clear that Dude Inc. has the Distribution Rights for Goya for the American Market, CF Martin Bought Levin Guitars In Sweden in 1973. By 1976, Dude sold the Goya brand to CF Martin and at this point CF Martin started importing Japanese and Korean instruments under the Goya name that most of us remember as being cheap, poorly made instruments marketed to aspiring guitar players. By 1979 CF Martin Closed the factory in Sweden and Levin Guitars dissolved into obscurity from the once prominent company that they were. From My Research this is a 1971-72' Model Made For Kustom Electric just before the process of them becoming bankrupt and selling the rights to Dude Inc. The Goya GG-174 is also Commonly known as the "Goliath" Body Style due to its 15.7" Inch bout to compete with some of the more popular American Steel String of this era. The GG-174 is the Replacement model to the Goya T-18 that was replaced in 1969. Overall this guitar I would say is in "Good" to "Fair" Condition for its age as when acquired by me from the previous owner it was in a pretty sad shape as it had several cracks in the top and sides alongside a good portion of the binding being missing from this guitar. Since then this guitar has been regularly humidified, I have repaired and glued the cracks in the top and sides, added new binding to the neck while still being able to salvage what I could save from the original. I've also put on a new bone nut as the original was disintegrated past the point of repair. This Goya is now in Playable, Stable Condition and is an absolute joy to play. Many guitarist will describe the GG-174 is known for having a clear transparent acoustic tone but personally to me this guitar has a very woody overtone that I can only describe if you have ever played an old Archtop Gretsch from the Late 40's Early 50's you would understand making this an ideal Acoustic for someone to Play Blues, Flat Picking or Fingerstyle on. Asking $500 OBO, If I can find a Chipboard case for this I will be happy to include it with the sale. Not Interested in Trades unless you think you have something I can't say no to. If you go to my page you will see everything I have posted and growing.
