Description
These are Dorothy Gray salon cold cream jars — empty, no product inside, but made of highly collectible milk glass -- from the 1950s or early 1960s. Dorothy Gray, born in 1886, worked for cosmetics queen Elizabeth Arden in the early 1900s before establishing her eponymous skin care laboratory in 1922. My grandmother, born in the mid-1890s, used Dorothy Gray cold cream religiously and had exquisite skin. This was grandma’s six-ounce milk glass jar which reads: “Cleansing and softening, for slightly dry and normal skin. Good for quick softening, clean-up, light, extra-fine. Excellent for young girls and for women who prefer cold cream consistency. Will not stretch skin... Apply with fingertips, using upward outward motion.” The cream sold for $2.25, but the original metal lid says it was on “limited time only” special for $1.25. The four-ounce jar reads: "Special dry-skin mixture…ideal emollient and softener….” The original metal lid says “$4.00 size” on special for $2. These are unusual and fun items to grace the shelf of any beauty or skin care salon -- or use to stash bobby pins or bath oil beads in a home bath.
