1930's Indian Brass Smoking Carsï

Description

This unique hand made brass creation came to the United States in 2003 as part of huge estate sale purchased and container shipped to an antique store in Sacramento California. As the pictures show it is mounted on a solid wood base that says "Antique Toy Car in Brass Rawalpindi Northern India Circa 1930's" In 1947 that area became part of Pakistan so the dating has validity. When I first purchased this it was painted flat black. It could be assumed that after the partition of India it was necessary to cover the metal to get it across the border. I saw a little brass showing and decided to clean it. Maybe a mistake but it's done. This item was not hand tooled as a toy. It is made as a smoking accessory with some cleaver features. Under the locking top it has containers to hold tobacco flavorings. On one side, an ashtray, on the other a clip to hold either matches or a pack of cigarettes which were much small then. The video shows what is no doubt the smartest feature. A box that would hold cigarettes and with the movement of the "brake light" handle, out rolled a ready made smoke. The stamping work is highly detailed, and on the hood is an ornament in the shape of a flying bird. Little placards on the front and rear bumpers symbolize license plates and in the rear there is little exhaust pipe on the right. I have seen less then five of these in my 22 years of online searching and none have had the detail of this unique piece. This item is 14.25" wide, 9" deep and 7" high
