Description
Striking in form and material, this vintage African vessel showcases the earthy elegance of traditional craftsmanship. Hand-formed from richly textured clay, the bulbous pot is detailed with taut rawhide strips that stretch from a wide leather collar, creating a dramatic, sculptural silhouette. The deep blackened finish reveals subtle brown undertones, hinting at its hand-fired origins. Mounted on a rustic custom stand with wood-textured legs and rawhide lashing, this piece has the presence of a ceremonial artifact, or a utilitarian pot elevated to art. Likely originating from Central or West Africa—possibly Cameroon or Nigeria—it dates to the mid-20th century and reflects the cultural artistry of pastoral and tribal communities. Perfect as a standalone statement piece, entryway sculpture, or as part of a global or bohemian interior. It also stands up fine without the stand. Very good vintage condition with expected wear. The clay vessel shows some scuffs, small chips, and surface marks consistent with age. The rawhide trim has darkening and a few natural irregularities, and the stand exhibits some patina and minor fraying to the rawhide lashings and a chip off the bark. All elements are sturdy and display beautifully. 12.5" wide, 12.5" deep, and 19.5" high, including the stand, without the stand, it's 16.5" high.
