Description

ANTIQUE Sterling silver Ibello Monopol lighter with accessories. History of the company (from an Instagram post, author unknown) COMES WITH EXTRA FLUID, WICK & FLINTS. The Monopol was made for decades, probably into the 80s and 90s, under a variety of names. Ibelo came first, founded by the Lowenthal brothers, and their first lighter was the Colibri Original. The Ibelo Monopol was introduced a few years later. Then Julius Lowenthal moved to London and founded Colibri while Benno, who had moved to Switzerland, moved to London and founded Benlow. Their sister stayed in Germany to manage Ibelo. After the end of WW2 Colibri and Ibelo were able to collaborate again, so you will see both Colibri and Ibelo Monopols. The later Monogas, M23, and other models used the same mechanism on a butane lighter. At some point one of the Colibri branches was bought by Kreisler, bringing about the Colibri-Kreisler lighters. But they are all Monopols and related to the same company.
