Chickering Antique Hand Carved Walnut Upright Piano & Upholstered Storage Bench Gold emblem: Chickering Est'D 1823 Boston, MA; Numbered: 166375; Beautiful carving of "Chickering & Sons" & shield EST 1823; Piano & bench each have four beautifully carved post legs. This upright piano and matching bench was designed by one of America's great makers, "Chickering of Boston." All original, the burl walnut case has octagonal legs and a lyre design music desk. The finish is very well preserved. Brass pedals and wheels are original on this vintage musical instrument. Original natural bone keys have some wear and shrinkage separation from age, see photos. This piano needs a tuning (has not been played in many, many years). This walnut is BEAUTIFUL. The Piano has a hinged opening/closing lid. The top shelf of the piano may be used as display. When closed, the piece may be used as a lovely display piece or buffet. Size is 61" wide, 24" deep and 38" tall. The bench has music storage space and needs new upholstery. Measurements are 34" long, 15" wide and 18" tall. There are 88 piano keys and three antique brass foot pedals. Chickering was established in 1823 by Jonas Chickering and James Stewart in Boston, MA. The partnership of the Stewart & Chickering firm dissolved a few years later. By 1830 Jonas Chickering became partners with John Mackay, manufacturing pianos as Chickering & Company, and later Chickering & Mackay until 1841. In 1837, Jonas produced a grand piano which utilized a one-piece, cast-iron plate. This improvement on Alpheus Babcock's cast-iron frame for the square piano proved to be the foundation of all modern piano construction, successfully solving the problem of proper support for the increased string tension required by larger pianos.
