Description

A true collector’s find ~ an antique Foley Staffordshire sugar pot, made in England around the 1890s, with extraordinary provenance. This piece belonged to Sarah Elizabeth Truax (1872–1959), one of San Diego’s earliest and most accomplished women artists. Truax was a professional plein-air painter, ceramicist, and art educator, exhibiting across the U.S. and Europe. She was a close friend and painting peer of Charles Reiffel, known as “America’s Van Gogh,” and played a pivotal role in the San Diego Art Guild during its early decades. When this sugar pot cracked, Sarah ~ ever the artist ~ repaired it herself with care and precision. The restoration, still intact after nearly a century, reflects her craftsmanship and respect for handmade beauty. Made by A. F. & Co. Foley, Staffordshire, England, the piece features delicate Victorian floral transferware with a Greek key border, classic of the era’s design. Its graceful form, dual handles, and fine patina embody both English ceramic artistry and California art history in one rare heirloom. 🩵 Details:
