Description
A bold and intricately detailed depiction of Bhairab, the fierce manifestation of the Hindu god Shiva, venerated in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions of Nepal. Likely crafted in the mid-20th century, this substantial mask is hand-carved from wood and finished in a deep lacquer that has developed a rich, timeworn patina that highlights its age and craftsmanship. The face is rich with expressive detail, including wide, intense eyes beneath arched brows, a curling mustache, and bared fangs framed by a radiating mane of stylized hair. The ornate crown features skull motifs, floral medallions, and inset red cabochons, recalling ceremonial masks used in traditional Nepalese festivals such as Indra Jatra. This commanding piece brings both spiritual gravitas and dramatic visual presence to any collection. It is well suited for display in a culturally inspired interior, as a collector’s artifact, or it could be adapted to hang as a striking wall-mounted focal point. Good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Areas of lacquer loss, surface chips, and age cracks present, including a stable fissure at the top. One of the three crown cabochons is missing. Fragment of an old red wax export seal on the back. 16” wide, 6” deep, and 19” high.
