Description
A piece of history. New York Yankees and Milwaukee Braves World Series. 1957. Hand signed Mickey Mantle and Johnny Logan Autographed AP Wire photo. Framed and matted, under glass. In a defensive play during the first game of the 1957 World Series, Milwaukee Braves shortstop Johnny Logan caught a grounder and forced New York Yankees' Mickey Mantle out at second base. Details of the play: The situation: In the top of the first inning, Yankees second baseman Gil McDougald got a base hit off Braves pitcher Warren Spahn. The play: Mantle followed McDougald with a sharp ground ball towards Logan, the Braves' shortstop. The error: Logan successfully fielded the ball in the hole but fumbled it while trying to get it out of his glove. Despite the delay, Mantle was still out at second base. A contemporary newspaper report, however, noted that Logan's fumble meant the play was scored a hit, allowing both McDougald and Mantle to be safe on base. Result of the inning: Spahn went on to get the next two batters out, preventing the Yankees from scoring in the inning. The Braves went on to win the World Series in seven games.
