Description

This is a vintage lidded musical beer stein, also known as a Steinkrug in German. The lid is made of pewter, and the body is ceramic. Lids on steins originated in the 14th century to protect beer from flies and other contaminants, particularly during the time of the Black Plague. This stein features a relief scene of two people, one playing a stringed instrument. This stein has a music box in the base that plays "Roll Out the Barrel," when the stein is lifted if you prewind it. Identifying Details Origin: This musical stein was made in Japan for export to Germany. Purchased by my father-in-law while visiting Germany.
