Description

This is a vintage hand blown and hand crafted cobalt blue glass folk art pitcher made by John Harko. John Harko (originally Jan Zacharko) was born in Austria in 1906 and when he was a youngster his family settled in Manchester NH. He would live the remainder of his life in the NH Queen city where he was a construction business owner, a two-time New England Featherweight Boxing Champion, and a WWII veteran. When he retired, he began glassblowing as a hobby and would use sand from the shores of Massabesic Lake in Manchester to make the glass he would use for his pieces. Harko never sold any of his creations and would give them as gifts to friends, family, and acquaintances he thought would enjoy them. His pieces were also presented to the likes of Israeli Prime Minister Menachim Begin and former President Gerald Ford. The subjects of the depictions on his works were historical Manchester or NH events. This pitcher depicts the 'Gen(eral) Stark Home' in 'Manchester NH 1776' on one side and 'Hiram Brown' as 'First Mayor' of Manchester in '1846'. Each work may have the same depiction on one side, but something different on the other and are truly original folk art works. Plenty more information is available online for John Harko and if you are so inclined just search 'John Harko Manchester NH'. This is a steal of a deal at $95.
