Description

March 26 1844 Columbus Ohio letter from one cousin to another. See the full transcription. Quite fascinating writing about marriage and a woman's duty to marriage being similar like slavery and a duty. 2 letters in one! March 26 1844 Dear cousin Reuben I received yours of the 12th  I was very happy to hear from my old friends and learn that they are enjoying good health which is neccessary to our happiness in this life. You alluded to one subject in your letter which never fails to fill my heart with the most tender feelings of emotion that is ____  sickness and death of Brother Henry. ____ is more , he has returned to his God ____ to enjoy his peace and happiness through ever ending eternity. I must leave? this subject it is too painful for me to pursue it any further. You informed me you thought of coming out to this country in the spring. If I thoughts that you could do with it it is hard for me to judge whether you could or not but there is nothing like trying as I informed you in my former letter the peddling business is ____ dull in comparance what it was in former years but I think theirs is money to be made at ____ that part of our business has not been very profitable to us this year in the first place the guns? He hired too large a salary more than he could afford to do for the future.  Page 2  We think that he shall not run but to trains this year. We have a young man ______ on team which he has offered to work for hundred dollars a year. He is a very good hand.  Mr. Wing? Has a young friend from Montpelier which he promised last fall to him if he would come to ____ the other team.  When I thought you he ____ I did not know Mr. Wing had hired his young friend. We have no spare team at this time. But this ___ not to discouraged you. Then will be an approximate? to get you on a team for you if you should come perhaps by the time you get here then will ____ arrangements to give you employment if you _____ I can get you a place if you will come. I do not think you will need much. I should advise you to come their is no mistake but what you can make money here if you try. I could not tell what wages you would get. It would depend on the ____ that you had in the _____ but I will ensure that you can get more than you can get in Vermont and not work as hard. I shall expect you this spring not before fall. I shall come there if nothing happens and bring my wife with me. I have not ____ to write by me, as Amelia wishes to write a few lines to Cousin Amanda.  My respect to all of our friends our friends William Richards  Columbus March 26th 1844 Dear Cousin Amanda, Husband has kindly offered me space in his letter to cousin Rueben to write you a few lines and with much pleasure I embrace this opportunity. I have nothing of importance to communicate but to inform you I have been living with my dear Willy these six months and I can freely acknowledge that I never knew happiness til now. To have a real friend to whom I can communicate my secrets and who on all occasions is ready to sympathize with me is what I never before experienced. All these benefits dear Cousin I have met with in my beloved husband. His principle care see me to be to do everything possible to please me. Perhaps you will laugh at the word duty and say that it imports something like slavery. But I think it is not say for even the life of a servant is as pleasant as any other when he obeys from motives of love instead of fear. For my own part cousin I cannot say that I am unwilling to be obedient and yet I am not commanded to be so by my husband I learn by the paper which I received from you a few days ago since that you had not received my letter. I was much surprised for I wrote you about four months ago. Excuse all mistakes for I do not feel much like writing for I have recently heard of the sickness of one of my sisters. Please give my love to fathers family and tell them I hope I shall have the pleasure of seeing my Vermont friends this fall. I will cease for this time and should you like to hear from me again will you do me the favor of writing, This from your sincere ____ unknown friend Cousin  Amelia Richards Comes in a protector sleeve with backing board. Pick up in James Island near folly beach. Shipping is turned on.
