Description

These "Hawaii" overprint notes were issued in 1942 as a contingency measure after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The intent was to allow the US government to demonetize currency in Hawaii should it fall into enemy hands. These notes are easily identifiable by the brown seal and the "HAWAII" overprints on the face and back. These notes were printed for the 1934A series $20 Federal Reserve Notes. The example here has a serial number starting with "L", indicating it was issued by the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco. The value of these notes depends on their condition and rarity, with uncirculated examples commanding a premium.
