Description
This is a classic Empire-style dresser (circa 1820–1850) Key Features: 1. Scroll Legs and Sturdy Base: • The distinctive scrolled “S”-shaped legs and thick lower base are hallmark traits of American Empire furniture. These designs were influenced by ancient Greek and Roman motifs, brought into popularity during the Empire period. 2. Wood and Veneer: • The piece appears to be made of mahogany or flame mahogany veneer, known for its rich, reddish-brown tone and striking grain. Empire furniture often used high-quality veneers to highlight dramatic wood patterns. 3. Drawer Locks: • The visible keyholes in each drawer suggest it originally came with working locks—another common trait of this period’s craftsmanship. 4. Wooden Knobs: • The round wooden drawer pulls are typical of Empire pieces. Some versions were replaced with brass later in the century, but this piece seems to retain its original wood knobs. 5. Top Gallery or Glove Box Area: • The narrow upper drawers (often called glove drawers) and the raised gallery back indicate this piece was likely designed for a bedroom, possibly as a gentleman’s chest or dresser.
