Description

The plant I ship is 1-2ft tall. Last photos show similar or actual plants. Goethea strictiflora is a rare tropical flowering shrub in the mallow family, valued for its unusual deep red blooms and lush tropical appearance. The flowers emerge directly along the stems and branches, creating a striking display of scarlet to crimson color against the rich green foliage. Unlike larger hibiscus-type flowers, the blooms are smaller and more tubular, giving the plant a distinctive ornamental character. The plant develops into a dense, upright shrub with a naturally branching habit. In warm climates it can reach several feet in height and gradually forms a full, rounded shape with age. The foliage is medium to dark green, slightly textured, and remains attractive even outside the flowering period, making the plant useful as both a foliage and flowering specimen. Flowering can occur in cycles throughout the warm season, especially under stable tropical conditions. Well-established plants may bloom repeatedly, with flowers appearing directly from older wood and along the stems. This growth pattern gives the shrub a more mature, layered appearance compared to plants that flower only at the branch tips. Goethea strictiflora works well in tropical landscapes, shaded patios, and collector gardens where unusual flowering shrubs are desired. It can be used as a specimen plant, in mixed tropical borders, or grown in large containers where humidity and moisture can be controlled more easily. Its relatively uncommon status in cultivation makes it especially appealing to collectors of rare tropical ornamentals. Overall, the plant combines compact tropical growth with distinctive scarlet blooms and a refined ornamental appearance, making it a strong choice for warm-climate gardens and specialty collections. Care Guide Light This plant performs best in bright filtered light or partial shade. Morning sun is generally well tolerated, but strong afternoon sun can stress the foliage, especially in hotter climates. Too much shade may reduce flowering and make the plant more open or leggy. Watering Goethea strictiflora prefers consistent moisture and should not be allowed to dry out completely for extended periods. Keep the soil evenly moist but not constantly saturated. During active growth and flowering, regular watering helps maintain healthy foliage and bloom production. Soil A rich, well-drained soil with good organic content is ideal. The plant benefits from loose soil that retains moisture while still allowing airflow around the roots. Adding compost or bark material can improve both drainage and moisture balance. Temperature Tolerance This species thrives in warm tropical to subtropical conditions, with ideal temperatures between about 70 and 90°F. It is sensitive to cold and may suffer damage below approximately 50°F. Frost can cause severe dieback or kill the plant. Humidity Moderate to high humidity is preferred. The plant grows best in humid environments where foliage remains lush and healthy. Good airflow is still important to help prevent fungal issues in dense growth. Fertilization Feed regularly during the growing season with a balanced fertilizer to support both foliage and flowering. Moderate but consistent feeding works better than heavy applications. Excess nitrogen may encourage leafy growth at the expense of blooms. Pruning and Maintenance Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages branching. The plant responds well to trimming and can be kept compact if desired. Removing older or weak growth can improve airflow and overall appearance. Pests and Issues It is generally not difficult to grow but may occasionally attract aphids, whiteflies, or spider mites, especially if stressed or grown in poor airflow conditions. Most issues are related to inconsistent watering or environmental stress rather than major pest pressure. Drought Tolerance Low to moderate. The plant prefers stable moisture and performs best w
