Description

Andrew William Vachon S.J. – "The Last Chord" (1961) Original Oil on Canvas Impasto Painting Offered for sale is an exceptional original oil on canvas painting titled "The Last Chord," executed in March 1961 by American artist and Jesuit priest Andrew William Vachon, S.J. This captivating composition depicts a solitary figure seated at a keyboard instrument, absorbed in a moment of quiet contemplation as the final notes of a musical performance fade away. The work possesses a deeply reflective atmosphere, enhanced by the artist's masterful use of light, shadow, and texture. Painted in Vachon's characteristic impasto technique, the surface is built with thick, expressive layers of oil paint that create remarkable depth and dimensionality. The richly textured brushwork catches light beautifully and gives the painting a sculptural presence seldom found in modern works. The reverse bears the artist's handwritten inscription identifying the title, artist, and date: "The Last Chord," March 1961. The inscription also references Juneau, Alaska, where Vachon lived and worked, adding historical significance and authenticity to the piece. Artist: Andrew William Vachon, S.J. Title: The Last Chord Date: March 1961 Medium: Oil on Canvas Dimensions (Canvas): 36" x 28" Dimensions (Frame): 43" x 35" Condition: Very good original vintage condition. The painting retains its strong colors and impressive impasto surface. Housed in its original wooden frame, which shows only minor wear consistent with age. No significant issues noted. An important and visually striking work by an American artist whose Alaska years produced some of his most distinctive paintings. A superb addition to collections of Alaskan art, religious art, mid-century American painting, or expressive impasto works. Artist Biography – Andrew William Vachon Andrew William Vachon (1910–1979) was an American Jesuit priest, artist, and educator whose work bridged spirituality, philosophy, and visual art. He pursued his academic studies at Gonzaga University, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in philosophy in the mid-1930s. Vachon later returned to Gonzaga in 1965, where he taught photography and served as the university’s artist-in-residence. Over the course of his career, he produced a diverse body of work including paintings, drawings, and prints, often inspired by landscape, memory, and theological reflection. His artistic style is characterized by a deeply personal and “visionary” approach, blending observed reality with imaginative interpretation. His works frequently explore themes of place, spirituality, and the presence of the divine in everyday environments. Vachon remained active as both an artist and educator until his death on June 1, 1979, at Gonzaga University. His legacy includes decades of creative output and a lasting influence within the Jesuit and Pacific Northwest artistic communities. Andrew William Vachon’s work was notably exhibited in the “Vivid in My Mind” show at the Jundt Art Museum at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington, from September to December 2015. The exhibition featured about 70 paintings and drawings spanning four decades of his career. Additionally, some of his prints are held in the Whitman College and Northwest Archives in Walla Walla, Washington, and one of his oil paintings is in the collection of the Ketchikan Museums in Alaska.
