He was part of the School of Paris, an informal term for artists working in Paris during the early-to-mid twentieth century. His works are often characterized by their bright colors and vibrant, expressive energy. While Ruolle created narrative and figurative paintings, many of his works are abstract compositions featuring human-like forms. His works can be found in various museum collections including the Carnegie Museum of Art. The Foire du Trône, or “Throne Fair” is France’s oldest funfair, and festive tradition unifying all ages and social classes, with roots dating back to the 10th century, having evolved from a medieval market into France’s largest and most anticipated annual event attracting roughly five million visitors each year. With over 350 attractions, the fair offers entertainment for every taste: modern thrill rides, classic carousels, carnival games, fireworks and a wide array of traditional fairground foods like gingerbread, cotton candy, and crêpes. Throughout the twentieth century, the fair was a source of inspiration for prominent French artists and photographers. Its dynamic atmosphere captured the spirit of popular Parisian culture during the era.
