This 1980s rattan and bamboo lounge chair and ottoman by Japanese craftsman Yuzuru Yamakawa is one of those rare statement pieces you’ll use constantly because it’s just that comfortable. The curved headrest and armrests were thoughtfully designed to provide the perfect amount of support whether you want to cozy up with a book, catch up on the news, or take a well-earned nap. Yamakawa dedicated more than half of his 79 years to perfecting the art of rattan furniture making, a fact that becomes abundantly clear the moment you sink into this chair. With its unstained bamboo frame and dark stained rattan surfaces, this set is perfectly at home on a jute rug among indoor foliage. A perfect blend of Indonesian tradition and Japanese craftsmanship. Both light and sturdy, the rattan shows no signs of weakness in the seat and back, the most significant load-bearing areas. A single one-inch strand of rattan on the left hand armrest had broken and has been repaired. The lacquered finish on the rattan has begun to flake off in some locations, primarily on the arms and edges (see close-up photos for reference). The bamboo frame is sturdy and shows light surface wear on close inspection.
