Description
Traveling Man Treasures is selling this stunning antique Chinese wash stand (pot washer). The wash stand comes with its original wash basin, which is extremely rare. Of note, on the bottom of the original wash basin there are Chinese imperial reign marks, which indicate the period during which the piece was made as a tribute to the emperor of the Qing Dynasty at the time: Wen Zong. The characters shown are 咸豐年製 (xián fēng nián zhì) which translates to "Made in the Xiantong reign" (1(contact info removed)). The simple yet strong carvings on this wash stand exemplifies the refined skills of the most talented craftsmen of Qing dynasty. Traditional Chinese designs decorate the top panel of the stand, including water, fish, and flowers. The wash stand is handcrafted and structured with wooden pegs and tenon structure, which is the very traditional craftsmanship for furniture making in ancient China. The wash basin not only bears the bottom maker's mark, but includes another passage that reads: "We stopped reading, tears staining our clothes; the monument to Duke Gongyang still stands, its inscription visible. The water flows into the cold, misty marsh; the fish are dyed in varying shades. We, generation after generation, ascend to this place again and again. The rivers and mountains retain their ancient beauty; people come and go, and human affairs change with the times." DIMENSIONS (approx): 62" H x 20" W x 16" D
