Sculpted by Chris Hess Retired: 2008 Fascinating Fun Facts: • Misty and Stormy are based on real-life ponies from the famous book Misty of Chincoteague (1947) by Marguerite Henry. • The story follows two children who capture a wild pony named Phantom during the Chincoteague Pony Swim and discover she has a foal — Misty. • Misty grew up to have a foal of her own, Stormy, featured in the sequel Stormy, Misty’s Foal. • The annual Chincoteague Pony Swim, where wild ponies swim from Assateague Island to Chincoteague, is still celebrated today — thanks in part to Misty’s fame. • Marguerite Henry bought the real Misty after writing the book, and she lived with Henry for years, becoming a beloved ambassador for the story. • Pinto is a pattern — big, beautiful patches of white mixed with another color, seen in many breeds. • Paint is a specific breed, the American Paint Horse, which combines the pinto pattern with a stock-horse build similar to a Quarter Horse. • All Paints are pintos (because of the pattern), but not all pintos are Paints. • Palomino is a shade of gold color. • Sorrel is a light, bright, orangey-red chestnut.
