Description
This is an ancient domestic terracotta oil lamp from the Holy Land featuring a palm-like design along the sides of the body, and displays clear indications of actual use. The oil lamp is in good condition with expected wear and a few small chips as shown. This Byzantine oil lamp was most likely made in Palestine under the rule of the Roman Empire during the 4th-5th Century CE. These lamps offer insights into daily life, religious practices, and artistic styles of the Byzantine era, especially in areas like Jerusalem where many were unearthed over time. Their primary function was to provide light, but also held significance in religious contexts, particularly within early Christianity, and were sometimes used as votive or funerary elements. DIMENSIONS: 4.25" L x 2.5" W x 1.5" H (lamp 2)
