Description
Yellow, Blue and Orange flower accents. Unique stamp marks of the artist (handpainted). Coffee Cup - Wildflower (Wild Flower) Table Ware - Franciscan- 1942 : Hand Decorated Embossed by Annette Honeywell 1942 Franciscan Ceramics created and produced some of the most collected dinnerware today, including the Wildflower earthenware art ware pattern. The color scheme is much richer than is pictured to be available from other sellers/markets and the stamping is unique to what else I have seen. Offers are entertained below the asking price. This vintage coffee cup by Franciscan is a rarity and is a 1942 original. The same artist/designer (Annette Honeywell) also designed the lines Desert Rose (1941), Blue Jessamine (1943, renamed Elsinore in 1946), and California Poppy (1950). This explains the similarities between the beloved Wildflower and the Poppy. Marks: Made in U.S.A. (back-stamp used from 1934 to 1984) in two lines is historically found in three sizes, very often without other identification. This stamp was used on items too small for larger stamps until 1984. History: The Gladding, McBean & Company was founded in 1875 in Lincoln, California. The two most significant plants of Gladding, McBean & Company were the terracotta division in Lincoln, CA, and the dinnerware & tile division in Los Angeles also known as the Glendale plant. In 1934, Gladding, McBean & Company began the manufacture of dinnerware and art ware under the trade name Franciscan Ware in their Los Angeles Glendale plant. (https://offerup.com/redirect/?o=Z21jYi5jb20=) The first dinnerware line offered by Gladding-McBean was El Patio, designed by Mark K. Grant and marketed under a new Gladding-McBean brand called Franciscan Pottery, before it was changed to Franciscan Ware. By 1936, Gladding-McBran was selling four-piece starter sets of El Patio and Coronado to newlyweds. (Collector’s Weekly) Franciscan developed and marketed numerous patterns of dinnerware and art ware. There are 489 dinnerware and art ware patterns including 163 China patterns, 147 Franciscan/Earthenware patterns, and 158 other dinnerware and art ware patterns and lines altogether. Wildflower (Wild Flower) Table Ware - Franciscan- 1942 The Wildflowers line was only produced in 1942. It is therefore, discontinued. The trade name Franciscan currently is not in use; all dinnerware has been discontinued. In that same year, all art ware was discontinued. Wildflower, Gladding, McBean’s third hand-painted embossed dinnerware was introduced and discontinued in 1942. Glazes: The glazes used in Franciscan Floral ware include white, glacial blue/turquoise, matt ivory- ivory (satin), flame orange, apple green, gray (satin) and oatmeal (satin). For Kitchenware, the glazes used included flame orange and Mexican blue.
