Description
The legacy of sewing and quilting has been passed down for over a century in my family, starting with my great great grandmother 5 generations back who quilted using flower sacks and repurposed clothing to make quilts and clothes for her children during the late 1800s up thu the Great Depression. This skill was then taught to my great-grandmother, Katie, who sewed for her family during the depression. My grandmother, Lucile, learned to sew from her grandmother and continued the tradition of making clothing for her family using secondhand clothes. She taught herself to quilt and mastered this art for many years. She passed down her knowledge to her daughter Kay, my mom. She not only made clothing for her own children but also pursued a degree in fashion and design and used her skills in the army. Kay instilled a love for sewing in her children and even opened her own alterations business. And then opened an alterations business specializing in wedding dresses. As the 5th generation, I learned to sew at a young age from my mother Kay and grandmother Lucile and continued my education in fashion and design at the same college as my mother. I now run my own alterations business and continue to seek new knowledge and skills, such as doll making and dressmaking. I've also found a love for making tshirt quilts. The art of sewing has been an integral part of my family's history for over 100 years, and I am proud to continue this legacy.
