Description
This is an antique letter from the Sales Manager to a Customer in Georgia. The shoe company was established in 1889. They were making 700 pairs of women and children's shoes a day. By 1912, they manufactured 7200 a day. They were considered high class shoes and were made by prisoners in the near by Kentucky Penitentiary Under contract with Kentucky, the company paid 250,000 a year to employ the inmates with some of that money going to the prisoners' families and the majority going to the state's operating budget. Some employees were not incarcerated women and girls. These females made a good wage of about 10 dollars a week in 1912. Unfortunately, the Great Depression had a huge effect on this, and by 1932, it failed. The sales manager who signed it had a very unpleasant death in 1920. He was working on a locomotive crane, and it toppled him and crushed him to death. It was found to be an accidental death. Interesting letter. Comes in a protector sleeve and backing board. Pick up in James Island near folly beach or shipping is turned on.
