- Provenance: integrally signed, original, limited-edition (118/200) monochromatic dry-point etching by Aimé Edmond Dallemagne, dated 1915 - Media: print ink on paper - Artwork Dimensions: 14 1/2”h x 8 5/8"v - Frame Dimensions: 19 7/8"h x 13 1/8"v - Condition: like new Aimé Edmond Dallemagne (March 16, 1882 Saint-Germain-en-Laye - June 23,1971 Boulogne-Billancourt) was a French painter, watercolorist, and engraver best known for his detailed etchings of French and Belgian cityscapes, often featuring historic and architectural scenes. He studied under both Armand Gautier and Paul-Eugéne Jobbé-Duval. He was a member of The Society of French Artists where he first exhibited his work in 1905, winning their third-class medal in 1914 and their second-class medal in 1921. Despite being a versatile artist, Dallamagne’s etchings are described as early-to-mid-twentieth century graphic realistic-romanticism, known for their fine lines and subtle use of shadow and depth. Many of his limited-edition etchings feature his signature, a numbered edition, and a remarque (the small additional sketch located on the right of the inferior margin). This is one of his series of scenes along the Seine, showing Notre Dame Cathedral (Our Lady of Paris) and the Île de la Cité (Island of the City) upon which the great gothic monument is situated. His charming views of beloved cities, to this day make his work a popular choice for fine art print collectors and Parisian art collectors in general. What strikes my eye the most by this work is the application of enhanced perspective, referencing the third point at the center of the earth, which enables Dallemagne to encompass half the Archbishop’s Bridge and the length of Quai de Montebello. It is a well balanced composition between the massive tree on the left and the cathedral on the right, both grounded by the bridge, animated by passersby who encourage us to enjoy the same view as they seem to be appreciating. The line quality denoting the leaves in the tree and the slight characteristic dilapidation of the surrounding buildings, shows the artist’s most natural familiarity with his medium, which helps us to empathize and identify with the artist’s particular sensibilities as he shares with us his unique impressions of the old capital city.
