A surrealist rendition of the traditional still life theme, this painting embodies all the mystique of the era; when societal traditions were being challenged by astounding advancements in technology. This almost atmospheric composition defies our sensibilities, featuring fruit that are depicted as almost formless abstractions materializing before the viewer’s eyes, levitating in space, and redefining their material boundaries at an elemental level. The man-in-the-moon-like face to which we might assume the obscure, even vanishing fedora belongs emerges from behind the tablecloth as if restrained behind a veil, suggests a ghostly presence from another dimension lying just below the surface of our experiential reality. This is a rare example of artistic experimentation, or high-artistic inspiration for its time, and for that reason it is by far one of the better pieces in the collection. This would go perfectly in an any urban setting, an apartment or modern home.
