Description

1943 steel Penny coins from San Francisco and Philadelphia 1957 Philadelphia 1956 Denver The Lincoln Wheat Penny, or "Wheatie," was first minted in 1909 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Designed by Victor David Brenner, it features a portrait of Lincoln on the front and two stalks of wheat on the reverse. The coin was minted at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints until 1958. Key Features and History: Design: The obverse (front) displays a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, while the reverse (back) shows two stalks of wheat, hence the name "wheat penny". Designer: Victor D. Brenner designed the coin, and his initials "V.D.B." were originally placed on the reverse between the wheat stalks, but were later removed. Commemoration: The penny was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth. Production: The Lincoln Wheat Penny was produced at the Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco Mints. End of Production: Production of the wheat penny ceased in 1958, and in 1959 the reverse was changed to depict the Lincoln Memorial. World War II Impact: During World War II, the U.S. Mint changed the composition of the wheat penny to zinc-coated steel due to a copper shortage. Rarity and Value: Some dates and varieties of the Lincoln Wheat Penny are highly sought after by collectors, with certain errors and varieties, such as the 1909-S VDB, and the 1943 copper cents, commanding significant prices. The 1909-S VDB is one of the most well-known and valuable wheat pennies, with a limited mintage and a distinctive design. The 1943 copper wheat pennies, made from copper planchets accidentally left in the press machines during the change to steel, are also highly sought after, according to the Spruce Crafts.
