Description
This is a vintage Marwal Industries "Darwin Monkey Thinker" statue, a reproduction of the 19th-century sculpture "Ape with Skull" by Wolfgang Hugo Rheinhold. The statue is made of chalkware with a bronze-tone finish. It depicts a chimpanzee sitting on a stack of books and holding a human skull, echoing the "Alas, poor Yorick" moment from Hamlet. The original sculpture, "Affe mit Schädel" (Monkey with Skull), caused a sensation when first exhibited in Berlin in 1893. Marwal produced these statues in the mid-20th century, often signed by artists like M. Lucchesi. The text "DARWIN" is visible on the spine of one of the books on the base.
