For sale is a very cool 1923-S Monroe Doctrine Commemorative Silver Half Dollar graded and certified by NGC as Uncirculated Details. This coin was minted to commemorate the Centennial of the Monroe Doctrine. It was actually a promotion between the motion picture industry and the U.S. Government to promote a film exposition held in 1923. The obverse of the coin features James Monroe and John Quincy Adams, who are most associated with the Monroe Doctrine. The reverse features an artistic rendering of the figures of two women in the shape of the Western Hemisphere. Only 274,000 coins were minted, and many went unsold so they were released into circulation. That means high grade coins like this one are even more or a rarity! The coin is 90% silver. As you can see from the pics the coin is in very nice uncirculated shape, as its grade states. As you can read from the label NGC gave it a DETAILS grade designation because it has been cleaned at some point in its life, which is why they do not give a number to its MS uncirculated grade. But these coins are so scarce in uncirculated grades that their value increases exponentially with ever MS number grade. It still has much of its mint luster, and all lettering, date, mint mark, and images are all clear. The coin has no damage and it has some cool crescent toning to both sides. I did reduce the price of the coin nicely due to the cleaning otherwise it would be priced MUCH higher. This is an amazing coin that no half dollar or commemorative coin collection should be without.
