Description
In 1893, banker William Hanna and several associates established Monmouth Pottery, located in Monmouth, Illinois. It produced utilitarian stoneware items such as bowls, butter churns, crocks, and jars. Early pieces were salt glazed or Albany slip glazed. Designs were hand painted in cobalt blue. The company eventually used stenciled and stamp designs and also switched to a Bristol glaze. By 1902, Monmouth was producing advertising pieces and miniature stoneware animals. Monmouth experienced two disastrous fires – 1897 and 1905. Monmouth’s independence ended in 1905. In 1906, Monmouth Pottery along with Clinton Stoneware Company, D. Clulberston Stoneware Company (also known as A D. Runkles), Fort Dodge Stoneware, Malcomb Pottery Company, Macomb Stoneware Company, and Weir Pottery Company were purchased and combined to become Western Stoneware. The companies made a wide variety of utilitarian earthenware and stoneware objects. Attrition due to economic and financial difficulties resulted in only Plant #2 in Monmouth being the lone plant in operation. Western Stoneware closed its Plant #2 in 1985. The company was revived but closed for good in 2005. A new purchaser was found. Minor where from handling and use and some very small chips along the rim otherwise in really nice condition for its age. Measures approximately 21 inches tall, 20 inches in diameter
