Maruni lacquerware box from Occupied Japan | 1940s vintage

This makes them noticeably heavier and sturdier than pure wood or contemporary plastic alternatives. They are instantly recognizable by their distinct vibrant color palettes The surface features intricate hand-painted or stenciled floral patterns, heavily highlighting shades of gold, bronze, orange, and white. Historical Significance: A massive portion of Maruni lacquerware items—ranging from vanity trays, cigarette boxes, and coasters to large bowls—was manufactured specifically for export during the post-WWII era. As a result, turning the box over will often reveal a stamp reading "Made in Occupied Japan" My husbands grandfather was a sergeant stationed in Japan and he brought this back. Because of age there are some small chips on the rim, all of which are included in the photos
