Modern Times; Vintage 1970s Heavy Chalkware Charlie Chaplain Statue: One of my favorite anecdotes involving my personal hero, Albert Einstein, was that he was in a limo with one of his closest friends; Charlie Chaplain and Chaplain’s fans were mobbing the limo and yelling and screaming and Einstein said to Chaplain, “What does it mean?” To which Chaplain rather dryly replied , “Nothing.” Charlie Chaplain was one of those rare people who became a legend while still alive. He passed away in 1977 at the age of 88. While still alive, the Esco Company began producing large chalkware (plaster) figurines of famous Golden Age film stars. Some of these have become very collectible and command big money. This particular version of Charlie Chaplain has taken him out of his typical black suit and bowler hat into a tan suit with a green bowler. I don’t know why they decided to do this but it does make it more interesting. This particular version is very difficult to find online. He measures 23” H with an 8” in Diameter base. The facial expression on this statue denotes that fiesty comedic energy that Chaplain was known for. My price is $115 and I am leaning to the firm side of things. These typically go from $125-$200. There are some carefully concealed chips but for something that is 52 years of age, it’s in very good shape.
