Description

A “mule” note happens when an older back plate was used with a newer face plate. Collectors ID them by the back plate number: • On your photos, the back plate number looks like 377 (lower right corner on the back). • For 1934/1934A Hawaii $20s, back plate numbers below ~480 are generally considered mules. During World War II, the United States government issued special currency for use in Hawaii. This was done in case the islands were captured by the Japanese, which would allow the US to demonetize the currency and render any captured notes worthless to the enemy. The notes were overprinted with the word "HAWAII" on both the obverse and reverse. These notes are part of the Series of 1934 and feature the signatures of the Treasury Secretary and Treasurer of the United States at the time. These Hawaii overprint notes were issued in denominations of $1, $5, $10, and $20. They are popular among collectors due to their historical significance and unique design. The $20 notes, like the one in the image, are particularly sought after.
