This technique has a rich history in Iran that dates back to ancient times. To appreciate Khatam fully, it's important to understand what it entails and the role of a craftsman in this intricate art. Khatam is characterized by a combination of regular and colored polygons with various numbers of sides, created from different materials. These polygons can have five, six, seven, eight, or ten sides, forming geometric or mosaic-like designs that result in elegant and eye-catching works. Khatamkari is one of the most original and beautiful branches of Iranian handicrafts. Producing Khatam requires not only artistic vision but also precision, patience, and skill. Many believe that this art form is rooted in Iran's rich cultural heritage, with significant contributions from the Safavid dynasty, which helped Isfahan become the center of Khatam production and promotion. However, some argue that Khatam from Shiraz possesses greater elegance and charm than that from other regions. A variety of local materials are used in Khatam production, including woods such as walnut, ebony, jujube, and orange, as well as bone, ivory, and camel bone. Metal wires, including brass, copper, and silver, are also commonly employed. Additionally, materials like Srisham and lacquer are integral to the craft. The Khatam-making process involves cutting wood, bone, or metal into triangular prisms and arranging them to form regular geometric shapes. These thin slices are then glued onto a thin wooden sheet, and once dried, the sheets are affixed to the objects intended for decoration.
